Lose the Weight of Worry

Jan 4, 2026

At the start of a new year, we often focus on resolutions about physical health, finances, or relationships—but what if the heaviest weight we carry isn't visible at all? This powerful message takes us into Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, specifically Matthew 6:25-34, where Christ addresses one of the greatest threats to our spiritual advancement: worry. Jesus doesn't ignore our real needs—food, clothing, shelter, family concerns—but He challenges us to examine what's truly weighing us down. Using the vivid imagery of a backpack filled with bricks representing our anxieties about money, health, family, the future, and even our faith, we're confronted with a startling truth: worry doesn't change our future; it only chokes our faith. The Greek word for worry means 'to be pulled apart,' and that's exactly what happens when we carry burdens God never intended us to bear. We learn that Jesus's kingdom resolution isn't about behavior modification but belief transformation. When we seek first His kingdom and righteousness, everything else finds its proper place. This isn't about denying reality—it's about remembering who holds our reality. The invitation is clear: cast all our cares upon Him because He genuinely cares for us. We have VIP access to the Creator of the universe, but we can't bring our carry-on baggage of worry into His presence. This message calls us to lose the weight of worry and embrace the freedom that comes from trusting the Provider, not just His provision.
