Jesus is The Light
This powerful exploration of John 8:12-30 confronts us with a challenging truth: we can be deeply religious, well-studied in Scripture, and still spiritually blind. Jesus declares 'I am the light of the world,' making His second 'I am' statement in John's Gospel, directly claiming divinity and fulfilling centuries of prophetic longing. The sermon draws us into the Feast of Tabernacles, where 74-foot-high candles illuminated Jerusalem as a reminder of God's pillar of fire during the Exodus. Into this setting, Jesus boldly proclaims that He is the long-awaited light they've been celebrating. Yet the Pharisees resist Him, calling Him a liar despite their extensive biblical knowledge. This reveals the danger of darkness: we can normalize sin so thoroughly that when Jesus illuminates our lives, we squint and cover our eyes like someone awakened by a sudden light. The message challenges us to examine where we've normalized lust, anger, gossip, greed, or compromise, treating our spiritual 'check engine light' the way we ignore the one on our dashboard. We're confronted with the reality that resisting Jesus means accepting darkness and death, while receiving Him means stepping into life, freedom, and transformation. The question isn't whether Jesus is who He says He is, but whether we'll stop resisting and finally follow Him out of our comfortable darkness into His liberating light.
