The True Vine

What does it truly mean to remain in Jesus, not just visit him on occasion? In John 15:1-11, Jesus offers his final 'I am' statement, declaring himself the true vine, and in doing so, he reframes everything we think we know about spiritual growth and fruitfulness. The passage draws a powerful contrast between branches that abide and branches that wither, and the difference is not talent, effort, or religious activity. It is connection. We explore what bearing fruit actually looks like, from the qualities described in Galatians 5, to loving one another as called for later in John 15, to making disciples as commanded in Matthew 28. Fruit, in this context, is not achievement. It is the natural overflow of a life genuinely rooted in Christ. And perhaps most sobering is the reminder that apart from him, we can produce nothing of lasting spiritual value, no matter how gifted or disciplined we may be.
