Jesus Is What You Need

What happens when the king we want is not the king we need? In John 12, we find ourselves in the middle of one of the most misunderstood moments in all of Scripture. A massive crowd lines the streets with palm branches, which were not merely decorative but were symbols of military revolt and national uprising, crying out 'Hosanna,' a war chant rooted in Psalm 118 meaning 'save us now.' They expected a conquering general on a warhorse. What they got was a humble king on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9 that promised a ruler who would bring peace to the nations. The tension between expectation and reality is not just a first-century problem. It is our problem too. We come to faith expecting circumstances to change, and Jesus moves to change us from the inside out. The crowd wanted Rome overthrown. Jesus knew the deeper enemy was the idol sitting on the throne of the human heart. This message challenges us to examine whether our expectations of Jesus are built on what he has actually promised or on what we simply desire. Because when we confuse the two, we set ourselves up for disappointment with a Savior who is actually doing something far greater than we imagined.
